About RenewByte

Giving Technology a Second Life

RenewByte is developing an approach to responsible technology reuse and refurbishment, helping businesses, schools and organisations explore better options for unwanted IT equipment.

Why RenewByte?

Technology changes quickly. Businesses and schools regularly replace laptops, desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones as their requirements evolve.

However, equipment that is no longer needed by one organisation may still have useful life remaining.

RenewByte was created around a simple idea: assess unwanted technology for potential reuse and refurbishment before considering recycling.

Our aim is to build a responsible and transparent process for assessing suitable second-hand equipment before any transfer is agreed.

Our Core Principles

These principles guide how we intend to develop RenewByte and its services.

Reuse First

We believe suitable second-hand technology deserves assessment for genuine reuse and refurbishment.

Responsible Handling

We aim to develop clear processes for equipment assessment, safe handling and responsible transfer.

Data Security

We recognise the importance of protecting information stored on retired devices and agreeing appropriate data-handling arrangements.

Transparency

We want organisations to understand which equipment may be accepted, what arrangements are available and what happens next.

Our Approach to Retired IT Equipment

01

Understand the Equipment

Review device types, quantities, condition, ownership and location.

02

Consider Reuse

Assess whether equipment may be suitable for repair, refurbishment or reuse.

03

Plan Responsible Handling

Discuss data security, suitable equipment acceptance and next steps. Waste electronics are outside our current service.

Taking Data Security Seriously

Retired IT equipment may contain confidential business information, personal data, saved accounts and other sensitive records.

RenewByte is developing an in-house Linux-based data erasure process. Appropriate handling and erasure requirements must be agreed before equipment is transferred.

We do not currently offer certified data erasure. Data handling requirements must be agreed before any equipment transfer.

Who We Aim to Help

RenewByte welcomes enquiries from organisations across the UK about suitable second-hand equipment. We do not currently accept WEEE waste for collection or disposal. Any transfer is subject to assessment.
