Data Security for Reusable IT Equipment
Second-hand computers and mobile devices may still contain confidential information. RenewByte is developing and testing data-erasure procedures; we do not currently advertise a certified erasure service.
Submit Equipment EnquiryWhy Secure Data Erasure Matters
Deleting files or performing a basic format does not necessarily remove all recoverable information from a storage device.
Businesses and schools should ensure that appropriate data sanitisation arrangements are in place before equipment is reused, sold or recycled.
Different Devices Need Different Methods
Hard Disk Drives
Magnetic hard drives may support verified overwriting or other appropriate sanitisation methods.
Solid-State Drives
SSDs require methods that account for flash memory behaviour and device capabilities.
Phones and Tablets
Mobile devices may require manufacturer-supported reset and erasure procedures.
Our Planned Data Erasure Process
RenewByte is developing and testing an in-house Linux-based data erasure workflow. These proposed stages are not currently a certified erasure service and should not be relied upon as a substitute for an organisation’s existing data-security requirements.
Equipment Identification
Identify devices and storage media, including HDDs, SSDs and NVMe drives.
Erasure Method Selection
Assess supported sanitisation methods and agree the appropriate approach before processing.
Erasure and Verification
Use suitable procedures and verification checks to establish whether sanitisation was successful.
Record the Outcome
Document device identification, the method used, results and any exceptions or failures.
Data Erasure vs Physical Destruction
Successful data sanitisation can allow suitable equipment to be refurbished and reused.
Where reliable sanitisation cannot be achieved, the storage media should remain secure until an appropriate alternative has been agreed.
Have IT Equipment Containing Business or School Data?
